You can be forgiven for cynically thinking "Another year, another Need for Speed." Frankly, that is what we thought when the latest title in the series was declared. After all the damn fantastic Most Wanted just came out a year ago, so what would Carbon perhaps offer so shortly afterwards that could get our motors runnin'?
It turns out that the answer comes in 2 parts. First off is the Wingman - not the buddy who'll sit with your hot date's ugly girlfriend at the bar - but a crazy fool who for reasons unknown will have no problem destroying his prized car and enduring broken bones just so that you can win a race.
There are 3 types of wingman, however all are not equal. We loved the crazy daredevil, who wantonly strikes opponents in the player's bidding. But we could have done with no wimpy, shortcut-revealing scouts and annoying draft specialists, who can only offer you a fantastic boost on straightaways - which are uncommon.
Also new this time out is that the roller coaster boss race manner in the Canyons. These ridiculously rollicking downhill chases involve a dual-round cumulative suicide assignment. You race down two times; once in front, and after from the back, together with the follower hoping to stay as close to the leader as possible. Whoever gets the most points wins - unless, of course, you hand over the success by barreling off the side of the road and to oblivion several thousand feet under. It is a nail-biting, profanity-inducing affair, and may be punishing as hell - but entertaining nonetheless.
Clearly, the remainder of the gameplay owes much more to the street race-y tuner Need for Speed: Underground 2 rather than the newer Need for Speed: Most Wanted. The only time it actually feels like a sequel to NFS:MW is in its story, which is told at that same bizarre, quasi-animation fashion and in which some characters return and carry the tale forward.
Do not worry, however: In case you skipped last year's game you will not be lost in any way. You're allegedly took a bag full of money, skipped town, then boldly returned to the scene of this offense. Naturally, former buddies are angry and sneer at you, but as true friends tend to perform, they ultimately use your vehicular exploits to enhance their particular origin.
